Last flight of F-16 J-246,   3 December 2016

For years it was a big wish for the city Uden to place a F-16 on a pole at a roundabout near Volkel Airbase. On December 3rd this wish came through as RNLAF F-16 J-246 made its last flight and was placed on pole along the N264 'Zeelandsedijk'. As this is only a few minutes from our house, my son Damian and I decided to have a look at this big logistic operation.

The J-246 began its life as 78-0246 with c/n 6D-35. It was delivered to the Royal Netherlands Air Force on September 9th 1981 as F-16A Block 10. In February 1982 it entered operational service with 323 Sqn at Leeuwarden AB. Between June 1994 and mid 1999 it flew with 313 Sqn and 315 Sqn both stationed at Twenthe AB.

In October 1999 it was withdrawn from use and flown to Woensdrecht AB where it is used as an instructional airframe at the KMSL. The past years it was used at Leeuwarden AB for tow training until it was shipped to Volkel AB. Although the aircraft was never stationed at Volkel AB during its operational live, it wears full color markings of the 312 Sqn.
