Frisian Flag Leeuwarden AB,   11 April 2016

In April this year the multi-national exercise Frisian Flag was held at Leeuwarden Air Base. Various countries with various aircraft types participate in this large scale exercise to bring pilots and ground crews in situations compared to real life. This improves the interoperability between the various NATO air forces, in both air-to-air missions, as well as air-to-ground missions. The EHR-2 Marnewaard and  EHR-4 Cornfield areas were used for the air-to-ground part, the EHD1-10 and parts of German airspace was used for the air-to-air part of the exercise.

This years edition saw six differenet aircraft types participating in the exercise; EF2000's of the GAF, Mirage 2000's of the FAF, Tornadoes of the RAF, F-18's of the Finnish AF, F-16's operated by the Polish AF, BAC and RNLAF, and just like last year F-15's from two different US ANG units. Eight F-15's from 104 FW MA ANG and 144 FW CA ANG arrived at Leeuwarden. Under the designation of the 131st Expeditionary Fighter Squadron the eight F-15's were accompanied by a further four aircraft detached to Keflavik to conduct Icelandic Air Patrol, which later re-joined the squadron as the TSP deployment continued.  (Click here for a log)
