F-22 Raptors arrive at Spangdahlem,  28 August 2015

Four F-22A Raptors, part of the Pentagon's continued push to deter Russia, arrived at Spangdahlem AB late August. The F-22's are assigned to the 95th Fighter Squadron based at Tyndall AFB, FL. A C-17 Globemaster and about 60 airmen from arrived earlier that day. The personnel was assigned here through mid-September and went through exercises to show that USAF's most-advanced fighter can deploy in Europe. Although forecasted otherwise, the weather during the arrival day was pretty good. While waiting for the arrival of Raptors it was nice sunny. Unfortunately we had some very bad luck when the Raptors approached, as some clouds came covered the sun. But we were very happy with these nice visitors.

During their stay in Europe the Raptors deployed to Polish Air Base Łask and on September 5th two Raptors flew to Ämari Air Base in Estonia as part of the European Reassurance Initiative. Although the Pentagon has emphasized that the Raptors were in Europe for training, the move was a clear signal to Russia, which continues to back pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine.

It was the first time Raptors have been deployed to Europe, it was not the first time they've been deployed overseas. Last year the U.S. deployed a Langley-based squadron to Kadena AFB, Japan as part of Theater Security Package Pacific as a show of force again China. And the fighter has regularly contributed in airstrikes again Islamic State in Operation Inherent Resolve.  (Click here for a log)
