TSP Europe arrives at Spangdahlem,  13 February 2015

On February 11, a total of twelve A-10 Thunderbolt IIs landed at Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal. The A-10s are being deployed to Europe as part of a Theater Security Package in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve. While deployed they will conduct training alongside other NATO allies to strengthen interoperability and to demonstrate U.S. commitment to the security and stability of Europe. The A-10s and Airmen are deploying from the 355th Fighter Wing, at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona.

Two day later the twelve A-10s were expected to land at their temporary base Spangdahlem AB in the late afternoon. The day started very foggy, with a visibility of less than 100 meters. Around noon the weather finally cleared so the first transport aircraft arrived a few moments later. Unfortunately not all twelve made it to Spangdahlem AB, as Tabor 33/34 diverted to Schiphol Airport due to an in flight emergency. One of the A-10s experienced a compressor stall and had to land at the nearest airport immediately. During landing at Schiphol the A-10 had a tire burst, but no further problems occured.

Besides the ten A-10s that eventually arrived at Spangdahlem AB we also witnessed the arrival of sixteen local F-16s which came back from an interoperability training deployment at Souda Bay, Crete. We also saw three Canadian Hornets of which two flew a local mission in the region. A third Hornet experienced a take off abort in the late afternoon.  (Click here for a full log)
