Kecskemét,  29 April 2003

The second night we slept very well. After Endre and Dávid picked us up at the motel we drove towards Kecskemét, which operates the L-39 and MiG-29. Just like at Szentkirályszabadja I managed to arrange a base visit. So after a short ID check we were picked up at the main gate and drove to the newly build MiG-29 hangar.

After we took some pictures here and we had a nice chat with the  maintenance crew we saw a MiG-29 taking off. This was a training flight for the air display. Later that day we were able to take some shots of this jet on the flightline before its second training flight of the day. A few minutes later, again two MiG-29s departed, this time it was an actual QRA scramble. It was nice to take some shots of the MiGs with some live ammunition.

At the flightline ten MiG-29s and ten L-39s were parked, but unfortunately not all of them were operational. And most of them were wearing cockpit covers. Despite that it was a very good base visit. Therefore we would like to thank everyone that helped us during our base visits at Szentkirályszabadja and Kecskemét.

A few kilometers from Budapest the Alsónémedi Scrapyard is located. This is a collection of old aircraft belonging to a mentally ill man that lives there. Endre and Dávid asked his wife whether it was possible to enter the yard and to take some pictures. After a conversation of a few minutes we were allowed to enter. The visit lasted an hour because it was sometimes very hard to identify the correct number of the aircraft. Around 28 MiGs of all types are dumped here, most of them are wearing a serial beginning with "19. ." This marks the year the aircraft left active service with the Hungarian Air Force. After our visit at Alsónémedi we had lunch at a Mc Donalds somewhere in Budapest. Here we said good bye to Endre and Dávid, because our trip went on through Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Endre and Dávid thanks a lot for these two fantastic days, you guys are great!

After leaving Hungary behind us we drove towards Sliač were we booked an hotel in Sielnica. From the hotel we had a nice few on the airbase of Sliač. Later that night we went to the airbase to see the night flying and the next day we visited Sliač again. Unfortunately we weren't able to take pictures in Slovakia due to the low flying activities here. A few months before we left I already tried to arrange a base visit here but I didn't had any luck. During our visit in Slovakia we again tried to enter the base. But even after a visit at the Slovak Air Force Headquarters in Zvolen we weren't welcome at any of the Slovak airbases. After writing down all the stored and operational aircraft at Sliač we drove to Prešov.

The helicopter base Prešov is located in the eastern part of Slovakia so it was a nice but long ride. After scoring some sixteen Mi-helicopter we drove back towards Sielnica where we stayed for the night again. The next day we left the hotel already around seven o'clock in the morning and drove towards Malacky-Kuchyňa. Here we read all the L-29s, Su-22s and Su-25s. As there was no flying activity we left after an hour and headed towards the Czech border. From here we drove directly to the airbase of Námĕšť Nad Oslavou. Here it was also very quiet so we didn't spent much time here. Next stop was the museum at Vyškov. Here we had to pay 30 CZK to get in. In case you didn't notice this is equivalent to € 1,= It's a nice museum and if you ever go there don't forget to talk to the owner. Here has lots of interesting stories to tell. For a small report of the museum, click here.

From the museum at Vyškov we drove to Přerov where lots of helicopters are based and lots of L-29s, Su-22s and Su-25s are stored. After writing down all the numbers we went looking for a hotel in Přerov. The next day we planned a stop at Čáslav. We heard rumors that Čáslav was closed due to work on the runway, but we didn't see anything on the runway. Despite that nothing much was happening over here, so we drove to Pardubice. Here we were able to read some L-410s and Mi-17s and after that we drove further up north towards Praha-Kbely. Near Praha we stayed in a hotel, which was very hard to find, as most of them were completely full. The next day we visited the Praha-Kbely museum and the airfield of Praha-Kbely. Around noon we left Praha and began our long ride home. On our way back home we also visited the museum at Zruč and we made a stop at Rhein-Main AB where we had dinner at the local Mc Donalds. From here we drove directly to Veghel where we arrived at 10.15h in the evening. This ended our very successful seven day trip in which we drove 4768 kms. Leaves me just one more thing, a very big thank you to my good friend Mark for a fantastic week.
